Advocate Barbara Corbett has completed her 15 years on the Tour de Rôle having qualified as an advocate in 2010. Being a Jersey advocate or solicitor on the Tour de Rôle means you help clients allocated legal support through the Legal Aid system in Jersey.

When a person qualifies as a Jersey lawyer they have to undertake legal aid cases on a 'cab rank' or rota system for 15 years. This means that each new person appointed a lawyer through Legal Aid is allocated to the next lawyer at the top of the list (unless there are reasons that lawyer cannot act for them e.g. there is a conflict). The Law Society of Jersey administers Legal Aid. To be awarded legal aid a person must qualify under specific criteria principally related to income and assets. Other than public law cases there is no public funding for legal assistance in Jersey for those people who cannot afford a lawyer so the legal aid system in Jersey relies on Jersey qualified lawyers participating in the scheme.

While Advocate Corbett will continue to work with legal aid clients, undertake public law work and she remains on the Children and Mental Health Panels, she will now no longer be given her own legal aid cases.
